Hollywood is still Hollywood, with its legends, traditions and excitement. We were reminded of this once again when we happily decided to visit the KJazz Buffet at the Renaissance Hotel's Twist Restaurant in the heart of Hollywood at Highland and Hollywood Blvd.
Performing that day was Melvyn Deacon Jones, who has been an international ambassador of the Blues scene for over forty years. This day at the Renaissance, with four other talented musicians, the music, was a mix of jazz and blues, with Jones displaying his usual flamboyant style as musician and entertainer.
We settled in for some great entertainment and the buffet that offered both breakfast and lunch items. We opened with cold smoked Norwegian salmon, heirloom tomato-buffalo mozzarella, a grilled asparagus salad and some sliced melon. Once done with this, our delightful waitress Vickie whisked away the debris so we could start afresh. Deacon Jones played on while we moved through a classic Eggs Benedict, bacon, apple chicken sausage and a generous slice of prime rib. We particularly liked the way the chefs kept bring out fresh platters of salads and appetizers.
During a music break we had the opportunity of chatting with Deacon Jones who told us about his 'Bucket of Blues Band'. More on this can be found on the web at deaconjonesbluesband.com. We came away with an autographed copy of his book entitled "The Blues Man, 40 years with the Blues Legends."
As good as the food and entertainment was the serving staff with Manager Antonio Moreno, Hostess Ana Edith and our always smiling waitress, Vickie. We also studied Twist's regular menu noting innovative appetizers, unusual entrees and an excellent wine list by the glass. Also offered with dinners were flights of three wines We thought their Prix Fixe dinner a real bargain.
Twist's Sunday jazz buffet takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner is served nightly from 5 to 10 p.m., closed Mondays. Twist is a large restaurant with some tables offering views of the Highland Avenue street scene and private areas for large parties. The decor is contemporary and modern right to the cutlery and dinnerware. There is valet parking and a full service hotel to go with Twist. Call 323 491-1816 for reservations.
