Fullerton--'Historic building gives Spadra old world decor'

By Raymonde Lorgeou

Although you may not recognize the name 'Spadra' this restaurant has been established for a long time. Until recently its name was Il Giotto.

The Fullerton Centennial in 2004 and the historic building location of the restaurant prompted Owner David Parker to change the restaurant's name from Il Giotto to Spadra, which is the former name of close by Harbor Boulevard.

This restaurant is located in a building that dates back to 1917 when it served as the Pacific Electric railroad station. It has vaulted beans and is laid out on two levels. Photographs of historic downtown Fullerton are displayed throughout the restaurant and combine well with the oak and brass bar area creating a delightful kind of old world atmosphere.

Spadra's location and decor are not the only things that draw this Writer to lunch and dine frequently at the restaurant. It has a well-balanced menu. A large choice of appetizers, salads and homemade soups make it a perfect destination for a light lunch. For the bigger appetites the menu offers several pasta dishes, a great selection of fresh seafood, chicken and veal specialties as well as beef of the best grade.

Generous use of spices and herbs add a unique touch to all dishes. My favorites are the Manicotti Ricotta cheese and spinach rolled in fresh pasta and topped with a tomato cream sauce. Penne Al Salmone: Penne pasta with pieces of smoked salmon. Pollo cremao: boneless breast of chicken with mushrooms and shallots in a creamy white wine sauce. Osso Bucco Divitelloo:: veal shank with hearty tomato and red wine sauce or Filetto al pepe: beef filet medallion sautued in a creamy brown peppercorn sauce.

In the evening Spada turns on the charm with dimmed lights, candles and flowers. Thursday through Sunday a guitarist entertains playing table to table. It is also atime to enjoy the fine wines collection of this restaurant. Friendly and qualified staff completes this exceptional dining experience.
